Newborn Diapers
Congratulations on your new little munchkin!
How do I know which diapers to purchase?
Although most one-size diapers say they fit from 8lbs upwards, newborns are too tiny to fit into these diapers to have them work well for the most part. If you start cloth diapering from the beginning, you'll want some newborn diapers to take you through the first 8 weeks or so before baby is ready to make the jump to one-size diapers.
The most popular newborn options are as follows:
The most popular newborn options are as follows:
- Kissaluvs Size 0 Cotton Fleece Fitteds plus a Thirsties Duo Wrap Size 1 Cover
- Bummis Newborn Prefolds plus a Thirsties Duo Wrap Size 1 Cover
- Tots Bots Tini Fit All In One Cloth Diapers
The most economical option are prefolds. You needn't wrap them on baby - you can always just fold them in half and then lay them flat inside a cover. Easy and super affordable. Many parents choose a mix of fitteds/all in ones and prefolds to balance the cost.
How many diapers do I need?
Newborns go through diapers quickly because they eat all day long! Typically you will do about 10-12 diaper changes in a 24 hour period. As a result, we recommend a newborn stash of anywhere from 20-32 diapers.
You will only need about 6-8 covers, and then 20+ fitteds or prefolds.
In addition to cloth diapers, we recommend a few optional accessories to make your diapering days a breeze:
In addition to cloth diapers, we recommend a few optional accessories to make your diapering days a breeze:
-
Pail Liner or Large Hanging Wet Bag - We recommend 2 so when 1 is in the wash you have another.
-
Wetbags - 1+ Odor and waterproof storage bags to hold dirty diapers when you're out and abot.
- Cloth Wipes - 2-3 dozen wipes as you can never have too many - great for baths, mouths, noses, hands over the years.
