Sounds great, what else do I need? This is a great basic kit. To make your cloth diapering life a little easier, we suggest the following add-ons:
Many families have also let us know that they love having a few one-step diapers on hand for their diaper bag or the day at Grandma's. Check out our All-in-One and Pocket Diaper offerings to see if a few (4-6) one step diapers make sense for your diapering gear.
What about a diaper pail?
You can use the Zipper and Drawstring Wet-proof Storage Bag in the kit as a stand-alone storage system or you can purchase a simple garbage can with a lid. Nothing fancy or sophisticated required. In fact, we love using a regular department store garbage can as we'll be able to repurpose it when our diapering days are done. More than we could say about a ‘genie' or a ‘champ'.
Everything sounds good, but I'm a little nervous of prefold diapers . They look like the old fashioned diapers that the older generations used. I want something easy! Prefolds are easy, but they are not entirely intuitieve. Along with the great guide and phone support you'll recieve with your kit, please have a look at our picutre tutorial to learn how to easily fold a prefold diaper. This folding technique is our favourite for a trim fit that keeps the mess where it belongs! Or if you prefer, we have a video tutorial demonstrating two ways to easily use prefolds.
This sounds like a great kit - organic, affordable and all bundled together. Are there any disadvantages? There are always trade offs with any product you choose. If you want organic + affordable, this is definitely for you. The only two drawbacks we can observe is that it is a bulkier solution at the beginning and y ou may not be able to the diapers and covers until your newborn's umbilical stump is healed (1-2 weeks post birth). The reason for this is that the diaper and/or cover may be tall enough to cover your newborn's healing umbilical stump. Often, they will heal better and faster if their stump is open to the air.
The solution for a less bulky beginning and the ability to start from day one: add on some items specifically designed for newborns. 4 packs of Newborn Prefolds and 6 Newborn SuperBrite Diaper Covers will get your baby in cloth diapers right from day one, right from 4lbs+. Even with their healing umbilical stump and tiny little legs, this combo will fit them beautifully. And the great thing about the prefolds is that you can use them to boost the absorbency of the infant sized prefolds when your lilttle one needs a little more absorbency.
With this combo (boxed kit + newborn add-on), you're still saving in those first three months of endless diaper changes. That could be put into an education fund or more importantly fund a really great massage (or two) for that hardworking mommy!
