The Flip is made for families who want a simplified system, with flexibility. The system is made up of a one size waterproof-breathable shell ranging in fit from 8-35lbs and an Oeko-Tex certified organic cotton insert for absorbency.
How does this system work?
The Flip diaper system is made up of a waterproof-breathable outer shell that grows from 8lbs - 35lbs with your baby. Like the bumGenius! diaper system, you select the snap setting for the weight of your baby, set it and leave it until your baby needs to move into the next level of snaps. If you are already a bumGenius! family, you may find the fit on the Flip a little more generous and need to adjust it down a little. This is good news for the babies out there that have a larger build as they'll get a better fit for longer with the Flip.
For the small setting, the front rise of the diaper is snapped all the way down and for the large, all the snaps are open. You don't have to unsnap and resnap every diaper change or laundry day, just set it and you are ready to use the diaper. The outer shell has a wipe clean interior with gentle form fitting elastic around the legs and back to ensure a good fit and excellent containment of wetness and poop. The shell comes with an Oeko-Tex Certified 100% Organic Cotton insert which is flat with fold lines sewn into it. You will fold the diaper short-ways into thirds for the small setting and long-ways into thirds for the medium and large settings. Lay the insert into the shell, tuck it under the flaps and you are ready to put the diaper on.
With this system, you can use 2-3 covers per day in rotation and simply switch out the wet inserts. If you have a particularly messy insert and shell, the shell will need to be taken out of rotation for the day and put into the laundry. If you want a very simple and easy system, make sure you have one insert for every shell. Pre-load the shells as they come out of the laundry and you essentially have an all-in-one, one step diapering system that still offers you flexibility, depending on your needs and situation.
What kind of flexibltiy does the Flip offer?
Besides being able to choose whether to use a few shells in rotation or use a complete set of shells, you also have the flexibility of choosing to use the Organic Cotton insert that it comes with, using a stay-dry insert or for the times when life demands something else - a disposable insert.
What about laundering this system? Do I need to do anything special or different?
The washing instructions are the same as all the other diapers at New & Green. Into the wash for a cold plain water rinse cycle, then a hot wash with an appropriate amount of recommended detergent. The insert can by dried in the dryer but we recommend that you hang/air dry the cover. You'll find that it dries very quickly and this practice will keep your Flip shells in tip-top shape and increase their longevity. Using a system with snaps is a smart choice if you'd like to use the system on more than one child.
How many Flips do I need?
It depends on how you are using the system and at what age you are starting.
Newborns: If you are going to use the "rotating the shell and adding in new inserts" method, then we suggest 6-8 shells and 24 inserts. If you want the "make it easy and simple" method, then you'll want 24 shells and 24 inserts so you always have a complete diaper ready to go. With either system you can easily add in a different insert if you need extra absorbency or extra convenience.
Older babies (6m+) use about 16-18 diapers every two days. 6 shells and 16-18 inserts or 16-18 complete sets will work for this set of babies.

What about overnights?
Depending on the wetting pattern and age of your baby you may need to add in another insert. We have found that the stay dry insert next to your baby's skin with the organic cotton insert underneath provides a nice solution for overnight, keeping your baby comfortable and their bed dry!
What are the other insert options?
The Flip Organic comes to you with it's own Oeko-Tex Certified 100% Organic Cotton insert. Also available is the One Size Stay Dry Insert and for the times that life demands something other than a reusable insert, there is the disposable Flip Insert.
