| Clean your Baby's Bottom with Less Waste and No Chemicals Have you thought about cloth wipes? It didn't dawn on me that there was an alternative to using a commercially made bum wipe that comes from the grocery store out of a plastic container. What else would you clean your baby's bum with?? Well after the hospital staff recommending that we use plain water to clean our baby's bum with and after our midwife kindly asked what I would like to have my baby's bum cleaned with, I got thinking. Why can't you use a cloth and some water or some gentle, natural cleanser to clean a poopy bum? The answer - you can and you probably should! Commercially available wipes often contain a number of chemicals including Propylene Glycol (commonly found in Anti-Freeze) to Phenoxyethanol (used in inks and dyes). Alcohol is also a common ingredient and most wipes are bleached to make them “clean” looking. Beyond this, I was always left with a pile of poopy wipes to throw away - but where - there is no garbage can in the nursery - we don't need one! So cloth wipes got added to our gear. And it has made life a lot simpler, less wasteful, less costly and decreases our little one's exposure to unnecessary chemicals. How to you use cloth wipes? *Have a stack of dry wipes with a squirt bottle of plain water or wipes solution. Wet a wipe as needed. (this is our method) *Once a day, pre-wet a number of wipes and leave them inside of a container ready to go at a moment's notice *Pre-wet a stack of wipes and place them in a wipes warmer - great for a less shocking middle of the night change! *What about that wipes solution? We have an easy 'solution' here at New & Green. Check out our wipes cubes. These are made with only natural ingredients and formulated to gently clean your baby's diaper area without chemicals and without spending a lot of money! Simply dissolve the cubes into warm water and you are good to go. Directions included with the wipes cubes. |
