Washing Cloth Diapers after a Yeast Infection Rash If your child has had a Yeast Infection Rash, you want to make sure that your diapers are free of any yeast spores to avoid re-infection. You need to do a little extra than your regular wash routine to ensure that you eradicate the yeast. This is what I would suggest: 1. Turn up the thermostat on your hot water tank if possible prior to this process to ensure that your hot washes are really hot. Ideally you want the temperature of the water in your washer to be at least 122 degrees Fahrenheit. Typically hot water heaters are somewhere in the range of 130-160 degrees Fahrenheit. As the water makes it through the piping, it cools a bit. If you can't adjust it, you can add a kettle of boiling water to the hot wash water. Remember to turn the hot water tank back down when you are finished to avoid any scalding!! 2. Watch the forecast for sun and try to do your "yeast-busting" on a day when you can lay out the diapers and inserts in the sun to dry or at least get some UV rays 3. Fill up the washer with HOT water and add some oxygen bleach (Nature Clean has a great Oxygen bleach that I highly recommend, Oxyclean is another option). Let your diapers have a hot bath for a few hours and then rinse them out with plain water. 4. Do a second wash with your detergent and 1/2 cup of baking soda in the wash. Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the first rinse, rinse a second time with plain water. 5. Lay out in UV light until partially dried, put in dryer on HIGH until bone dry. **An easy way to add the vinegar to the rinse cycle is to put it in one of those Downy balls. The ball opens up to release the vinegar at the right time in the cycle so you don't have to wait and add it manually. This should do it! If your child continues to be sensitive to yeast infection rashes, you may need to think of a cloth diapering solution that keeps their diaper area less moist and cooler.
