Ideas for your Newborn Baby

Choosing a diapering system for your newborn can be a daunting task. Here at New & Green, we have tested lots of diapers and realized a few things about the newborn period:

• We were “newborn” parents and needed a system that didn’t require a degree in diapering
• Our newborn baby grew fast
• Our newborn baby peed and pooped a lot
• Our newborn baby wasn’t that wiggly when diapering her
• Our newborn baby was changed very often, even through the night

Keeping all this in mind, we found that we needed a diapering system that was reasonably priced (needed a couple dozen diapers), that washed and dried easily (cotton), that was intuitive to use without a lot of steps, that kept the poop where it belonged, that had a reasonable amount of absorbency (we didn’t need a diaper fit for a super soaker as she was changed fairly often) and that actually fit her without too much bulk.

We started cloth diapering our daughter at about 2 weeks of age.  Her umbilical cord had fallen off and healed so this was not a concern for us.  This is what our newborn stash consisted of for our daugher who was 7lbs, 14oz at birth:

• 24 Dri-Line and Blue Dog fitted Diapers (some snap, some Velcro)
• 2 Newborn Bummis Super Whisper Wraps for those days when you wanted a nice snug fitting combo (we now have Super Brites and small Wool flannel covers that would also be a great choice).
• 4 small Bummis Super Whisper Wraps (I was partial to the Star Baby and Froggy Prints)
• 4 small Fuzzi Bunz with the microfiber inserts that they came with (check our pocket diaper and AMP all in one diaper selection for other  "easy to use" ideas)
• 1 laundry bag/diaper pail liner
• 1 diaper pail
• 2 diaper tote bags
• 6 fleece liners
• 6 diaper doublers for a little more absorbing power for when we did start leaving her longer at night (our rule – don’t wake a sleeping baby!)
• 36 cloth wipes (combo of flannel and sherpa - a little variety was nice)
• Recycled Peri Bottle for water/wipes solution
• Deo discs for the diaper pail (change every few weeks)

And that is it! This kept us going until about 4 ½ months, washing every second day at first and then stretching it to every third day. Our little one is of the “tall and slim” variety, so she may have gotten a longer run out of the Dri-lines than typical. They are sized for up to 15lbs as are the small Bummis Super Whisper Wraps.

We made do with this setup, but thinking back, I would have had one more diaper pail liner (for when the other one is in the laundry) and 2 more small diaper covers because sometimes I just needed more and to wash to have to wash one by hand was a hassle. And lastly I really, really loved Fuzzi Bunz (still do!) so I definitely could have had more of those (or other easy to use diapers)!
